where to start reading the bible

Where to Start Reading the Bible

A good place to start is a Gospel such as Luke or John to meet Jesus in a sustained story. Psalms can accompany prayer, but reading one book in order usually gives more context than jumping among isolated verses.

A place to begin

The Bible is a library rather than a single modern book. You can begin with one accessible section, read a short unit regularly, and let questions remain while you learn the larger story.

Three passages to read

01

Luke 1:1–4

Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us, even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus; that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed.

Context

Luke opens by describing an orderly account based on transmitted testimony so the reader may know its certainty.

Would a carefully narrated account help you begin with continuity?

02

John 20:30–31

Therefore Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

Context

John explains that selected signs were written so readers may believe and have life in Jesus' name.

How does an author's stated purpose guide the way you read the book?

03

Psalm 1:1–3

Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the LORD’s law. On his law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water, that produces its fruit in its season, whose leaf also does not wither. Whatever he does shall prosper.

Context

Psalm 1 opens the Psalter with a picture of sustained attention to God's instruction.

What small rhythm would let reading become regular without becoming a test?

A simple practice

  1. Choose Luke or John and begin at chapter 1.
  2. Read one paragraph or chapter, then write what happened and one question.
  3. Continue in order three times before deciding whether the starting point fits.

Questions for reading

Should a beginner start in Genesis?

You can, but it is not required. A Gospel offers a direct starting point with Jesus, after which the wider story can be explored.

How much should I read each day?

Use an amount you can understand and return to. A short paragraph read attentively is a meaningful beginning.
