how to meditate on scripture
How to Meditate on Scripture
Biblical meditation is sustained attention to God's instruction: reading slowly, remembering, considering, and responding. It is not a technique for emptying every thought or forcing a particular feeling.
A place to begin
Meditation gives a short passage enough time to move from quick recognition toward understanding and practice. The surrounding text still matters; repetition should deepen meaning rather than replace it.
Three passages to read
01
Psalm 1:1–3
Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the LORD’s law. On his law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water, that produces its fruit in its season, whose leaf also does not wither. Whatever he does shall prosper.

03
Joshua 1:7–9
Only be strong and very courageous. Be careful to observe to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded you. Don’t turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success. Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

Context

What response does this text call for beyond a peaceful feeling?
A simple practice
- Choose two to four verses and read the surrounding paragraph once.
- Read the selection aloud three times, emphasizing different words without inventing hidden meanings.
- Write one truthful observation and one response you can carry into today.
Questions for reading
How long should Scripture meditation take?
Five attentive minutes can be useful. The aim is steady attention and response, not reaching a required duration.
Is meditation the same as Bible study?
They overlap. Study investigates meaning and context; meditation lingers with that meaning so it can shape memory, prayer, and action.
