how to read the bible in context

How to Read Bible Verses in Context

Read the paragraph around a verse, identify its speaker and audience, notice the book's purpose and genre, and compare your interpretation with the wider biblical story before applying it.

A place to begin

A verse can be memorable and still be misunderstood when detached from its argument or story. Context does not make Scripture less personal; it gives a sounder basis for a responsible personal response.

Three passages to read

01

Luke 24:25–27

He said to them, “Foolish people, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Didn’t the Christ have to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?” Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

Context

Jesus interprets events about himself across Moses and the prophets within the Bible's larger story.

What larger storyline might a single sentence belong to?

02

Nehemiah 8:5–8

Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people (for he was above all the people), and when he opened it, all the people stood up. Then Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. All the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” with the lifting up of their hands. They bowed their heads, and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground. Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law; and the people stayed in their place. They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.

Context

The people hear the law read and receive explanation so they can understand the reading.

Where would background or a trusted explanation clarify what you are reading?

03

Acts 17:10–12

The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea. When they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue. Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. Many of them therefore believed; also of the prominent Greek women, and not a few men.

Context

The Bereans receive the message eagerly and examine the Scriptures daily to evaluate it.

What claim should be checked against the surrounding text rather than accepted from a quote?

A simple practice

  1. Read at least the complete paragraph before and after the verse.
  2. Write who speaks, to whom, and what situation prompted the words.
  3. State one application that follows from the text and one claim the text does not support.

Questions for reading

How much surrounding text counts as context?

Start with the paragraph, then expand to the chapter and the book's purpose when a question remains.

Can a verse still speak to my situation?

Yes. Application becomes more trustworthy when it grows from the passage's meaning rather than replacing it.
