prayer of lament
How to Pray a Prayer of Lament
A biblical lament tells God what hurts, asks direct questions, requests help, and remembers reasons for trust. It does not require you to call suffering good or rush into a cheerful ending.
A place to begin
Lament is faithful speech from inside trouble. The Bible preserves these prayers so that grief, protest, waiting, and trust can appear together rather than forcing pain out of prayer.
Three passages to read
01
Psalm 13:1–6
How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart every day? How long shall my enemy triumph over me? Behold, and answer me, LORD, my God. Give light to my eyes, lest I sleep in death; lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed against him;” lest my adversaries rejoice when I fall. But I trust in your loving kindness. My heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, because he has been good to me.

02
Psalm 22:1–5
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, and from the words of my groaning? My God, I cry in the daytime, but you don’t answer; in the night season, and am not silent. But you are holy, you who inhabit the praises of Israel. Our fathers trusted in you. They trusted, and you delivered them. They cried to you, and were delivered. They trusted in you, and were not disappointed.

What changes when pain and inherited memory are allowed in the same prayer?
03
Habakkuk 1:2–4
LORD, how long will I cry, and you will not hear? I cry out to you “Violence!” and will you not save? Why do you show me iniquity, and look at perversity? For destruction and violence are before me. There is strife, and contention rises up. Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails; for the wicked surround the righteous; therefore justice comes out perverted.

Context
The prophet asks how long violence and distorted justice will continue without relief.
What wrong needs to be named plainly rather than spiritualized?
A simple practice
- Write one sentence beginning with 'How long' or 'Why' without correcting it.
- Make one concrete request for help, protection, truth, or justice.
- Name one past mercy or trusted truth without using it to silence the complaint.
Questions for reading
Is lament a lack of faith?
No. Biblical lament directs anguish toward God and often holds protest and trust together.
Must a lament end happily?
No. Some biblical laments remain unresolved. Hope can be present without pretending circumstances have changed.
