Leviticus 23:13 · measurement explained

Two tenths ephah and one quarter hin

The firstfruits instruction specifies a grain offering mixed with oil and a quarter-hin drink offering of wine.

Read the verse first

The meal offering with it shall be two tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil, an offering made by fire to the LORD for a pleasant aroma; and the drink offering with it shall be of wine, the fourth part of a hin.

Modern measurement range

Fine flour: two tenths ephah

4.2–4.6 L

1.11–1.22 US gal · 0.92–1.01 Imp gal

Using the ephah estimate. Ancient jars and regional standards differ. Litres express capacity, not the weight of grain or flour placed in that capacity.

Wine: one quarter hin

875–950 mL

0.92–1.0 US qt · 0.77–0.84 Imp qt

Using the hin estimate. Published tables differ substantially for the hin. This site consistently uses the ESV-style one-sixth-bath system instead of mixing incompatible tables.

The calculation reads the stated capacities; it does not infer a recipe yield, ingredient density, or alcohol content.

What this conversion does—and does not—show

It gives a defensible modern scale for the amount stated in the verse. Ancient standards varied by time and place, so the endpoints are deliberately approximate. A volume is not a food mass, a metal weight is not a modern cash value, and a conversion does not settle a textual, archaeological, or theological debate.
