Exodus 30:13 · measurement explained

Half a sanctuary shekel and twenty gerahs

The census offering is half a sanctuary shekel, and the verse explicitly defines the full shekel as twenty gerahs.

Read the verse first

They shall give this, everyone who passes over to those who are counted, half a shekel according to the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty gerahs); half a shekel for an offering to the LORD.

Modern measurement range

Offering: half a shekel

4.8–7.0 g

0.17–0.25 oz

Using the shekel by weight estimate. Merchant, sanctuary, royal, regional, and later coin standards differed. The broad range prevents a single 11 g reference estimate from being treated as universal.

Full shekel: twenty gerahs

11–12 g

0.39–0.42 oz

Using the gerah estimate. The displayed mass follows the selected ESV-style estimate rather than claiming every historical shekel was identical.

The internal ratio is textual; the gram range remains approximate because sanctuary and other historical shekel standards were not all identical.

What this conversion does—and does not—show

It gives a defensible modern scale for the amount stated in the verse. Ancient standards varied by time and place, so the endpoints are deliberately approximate. A volume is not a food mass, a metal weight is not a modern cash value, and a conversion does not settle a textual, archaeological, or theological debate.
